What is the best ski resort for day trips from NYC?

I live in Upper Manhattan, and have a car so I would be driving. I am looking for overall quality, distance, rentals, not too many kids, possibly without snowboarders, and a lesson for my boyfriend. I want to go for my birthday which is Dec 7 (Sun) but would probably want to go on a weekday. Are the slopes open that early? Is their any way to know if they will be making now?
I said no snowboarders b.c in the past I have had a lot of snowboarders who didn’t know what they were doing crash in to me coming down the slopes. I want to try snowboarding one day myself, but for now I’d rather not have to deal with it ;).

For more info the best way to go school day trips 34 hours form new york very crowded on weekends lots of these have good snowmaking southern vermont.
The best way too far for day trips 34 hours jack frostboulder pa is abut hours form.
