Is it OK to tell a potential employer that I have a vacation scheduled?

Sarah asked:

I have a telephone interview this week for a job in Pittsburgh (I live in NJ), and if I get it, I anticipate that it will start sometime in July. My fiance and I have a week-long vacation scheduled for the week of July 1st. If the company offers me the job and asks when I am available to start, is it appropriate to tell them that I have a vacation scheduled and won’t be able to start until after I return? I would also have to give my current employer two-weeks notice, as well as give myself time to move out there. Or should I just give them a date for after the vacation and not tell them my reason? Our hotel is already totally paid for and non-refundable, so I can’t postpone the trip. Thank you!

Just ask them if it would be ok if you started after a certain date.

The right approach in my 11 years of work experience was frequently surprised at how people who respect their supervisors so go ahead and tell them if they will wait.

Absolutely tell them. It will make you look horrible if you dont.

When they ask when you can start, just give them a date after your two week notice and after your vacation. You don’t have to volunteer any other information.
