Puerto Rico: One hotel and travel to all other locations?

How possible is it to stay at one hotel in Puerto Rico and do day trips in the northern part of Puerto Rico? I would be traveling all the way to the northwest corner for whale watching, going slightly southeast cave exploring and all the way to the east coast for the beach and then slightly inland for the rain forest. I’d only be in the north for my trip. I was thinking of staying at in the North eastern area such as the Rio Mar Beach Resort. Could I stay in one hotel and travel to the rest of the areas during the day? And could I get by on some sort of transportation other than renting a car? For example, do tourist agencies from hotels provide transportation to tourist destinations?
