holiday in the UK for a single person, less than a week?

I am a US citizen planning to visit the UK the week after Easter and I have less than a week. My plane should land at Gatwick on Thursday and I am planning to go to London afterwards. There are so many places that I want to visit and I have been looking at websites, but I don’t have enough time for a tour over 4 days and the shorter ones seem to start on days that I can’t make it. Castles are the main things I want to see and I want to see the English and/or Scottish countryside. I’m also concerned about price and keeping the costs of transportation as low as possible. My dream is to visit Bronte country and York because Emily Bronte is one of my favorite authors and I would love to see the moors that she wrote about in Wuthering Heights. I know this is a lot to ask in one question, but if anyone would have some helpful hints or advice about tour companies or lower costs on transportation, it would be much appreciated. Thanks
